In June 1956, (1926–1962) married the playwright Arthur Miller (1915–2005). Soon after, the couple flew to London where Marilyn would begin filming The Prince and the Showgirl opposite Sir Laurence Olivier (1907–1989), then considered the world’s finest actor. The film would be produced by Marilyn Monroe Productions and directed by Lord Olivier (which technically made Marilyn Sir Larry’s boss). Despite a tumultuous working relationship, the result was a charming period romantic comedy set in Edwardian England, for which Marilyn received Italy’s David Di Donatello and France’s Crystal Star awards as Best Actress. The sleek purple barrel of the Showgirl Ballpoint, embellished with a Swarovski crystal on the crown, pays tribute to that sparkling performance.
